The Emerging Role of Offshore Wind for Energy Security in Small Island Developing States

SIDS face various structural challenges in their energy systems, including high electricity generation costs, limited land availability and reliance on volatile, imported fuels. Offshore wind, combined with other renewable, ocean-based technologies, can help improve electricity costs, reduce import exposure, strengthen resilience and support energy and water security.
While many SIDS show strong commitment to climate targets and a willingness to deploy renewable energy, access to affordable finance to advance both renewable projects and related infrastructure can be a challenge. SIDS governments will benefit from strong cooperation with international partners and regional coordination to learn from experience, de-risk investments and improve access to affordable finance.
This joint report produced by the Global Offshore Wind Alliance and IRENA examines how offshore wind and other ocean technologies can help to overcome the structural challenges faced by Small Island Developing States face in their energy transitions.
